OPEN LETTER: MULCAHY CLAN DERBFINE COUNCIL
Dear Clansmen and Women.
This is a notice from Clan Mulcahy for anyone interested in joining the "Ad hoc" Derbfine council for the Clan. The Derbfine was historically the power base of all historical Gaelic Clans. It was made up of a 3 or 4 generational group who shared common descent from the reigning Chieftain of the Clan.
Our Derbfine is designed to act in the same way, by nominating a number of individuals to speak on behalf of the Clan and to vote on important decisions.
The real reason behind the establishment of an 'Ad hoc' or temporary Derbfine is to elect a Chieftain for the Mulcahy Clan. Unlike other Clans this Chieftain would not be merely an honorary office, the Derbfine would choose a candidate from amongst the ranks of the Council to become the new Bloodline or hereditary Chieftain of the Mulcahy Clan. There is no current Chieftain for the family and the Chiefly line is currently lost.
Restoring the Chiefship to the Mulcahy Clan will be a crucial part of restoring Gaelic pride within our family. That is why we seek only the most enthusiastic members to undertake such a task. This notice is being circulated to everyone who signed up to our mailing list as well as on our website, we also hope that you share it to anyone who might be interested in joining our Derbfine Council.
You are eligible for inclusion in our council if you are a Mulcahy by birth i.e. you bear the Mulcahy surname, or your mother was a Mulcahy by birth.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please feel free to contact me personally to know more or to ask any further questions regarding the Mulcahy Clan, the Derbfine Council or the choosing of a Chieftain.
Go raibh maith agaibh go leir.

The Kingdom of Desmond Association
The surname of Mulcahy (Ó Maolchatha, Ó Maolchathaigh) originated in Munster close to the Tipperary/Waterford border. However the name has a long and ancient history in the surrounding counties of Cork, Kerry and Limerick. (Many of the name Mulcahy in Limerick may in fact be Mulclahy (Ó Maolchluiche), a name of Connacht origin). Interestingly the earliest known reference to a Mulcahy is not to be found in Waterford or Tipperary, but in Kerry. The annals of Innisfallen mention Giolla Maenaig Ó Maolchatha who was one of the "Keepers of the Island" in 1317AD.
As a result of the long association that the Mulcahy name has had within the traditional territory of Desmond (Deas Mhumhain) once ruled my the MacCarthy dynasties, we have joined forces with The Kingdom of Desmond Association and have been recognised by the association as being part of the once powerful Desmond Kingdom. The Kingdom of Desmond Association is the only group who actively seek to perpetuate and reinstate the Gaelic order and actively explore ways in which aspects of this order can be reestablished, such as Brehon Law and a revised system by which Chiefly successions are recognised. We recomend a visit to The Kingdom of Desmond Association website to learn more.
