Welcome to
The Mulcahy Clan
Fáilte go Clann Ui Mhaolchathaigh
This community is intended to act as a portal for the sharing and celebration of the history of the honorable name of Mulcahy and its many variant spellings. It will act as a meeting place for bearers of the Mulcahy surname, or Ó Maolchatha in Irish, as well as for all those who wish to lend their support to the continued study and celebration of Gaelic culture.
Gaelic Ireland was one of the world's first cultures to adopt the use of hereditary surnames. Many of Ireland's oldest and most celebrated families have continued to pass on their names for well over 1000 years. The defeat of the armies of Hugh O’Neill and Hugh O’Donnell and their supporters at Kinsale in 1601 ultimately put an end to the Gaelic order. A complex and ancient system of law which had been in existence in some form or other for millennia. The flight of the Gaelic nobility following Kinsale meant that without their patronage, Gaelic culture fell into ruin. Ireland would be changed forever.
However with this community we hope to resurrect some semblance of Gaelic culture and endeavor to organise the Mulcahy community into a real and authentic embodiment of Gaelic culture. There are many modern "Clans" in operation today for many Irish families, and while these "clans" have the best of intentions, we wish to ground our community on more historic authentic principles. Below is an outline of our mission.
